The Cold Chain: Frozen Foods

The Cold Chain: Frozen Foods

The cold chain is the term used to refer to the path that frozen foods take from the person who produces and packages them to our tables. This journey concerns all those foods that must continually travel at rigid temperatures to preserve the layer of ice that protects them on the surface. The good preservation of frozen foods, therefore, begins from the packaging, i.e. from what protects the contents from any possibility of external contamination.

Thermal bags for transporting frozen foods

The cold chain

In the sector the packaging we are referring to are known as thermal bags for the transport of frozen food and each of us will have handled them at least once in our life. These particular packagings ensure the good quality of the product throughout the entire cold cycle. A particular transport that takes place at ice… temperatures!

This type of bag ensures that the food remains intact within a precise cold range and protects it until consumption, as long as it has always been well kept.

The cold chain

The cold chain is a particular type of transport that takes place below zero degrees and which reaches even -18°, at least in the first phase. The cold chain is made up of producers, transporters, retailers and consumers. Each one plays a decisive role for the preservation of the food which arrives at the table fresh and tasty, just like when it was prepared. The materials with which the envelopes are designed, therefore, must be light, robust and resistant to any external agent. It is very important that in order to enjoy a carefully preserved and therefore quality product, it is necessary to respect each phase of the cold chain to the best of its ability.

Conservation from purchase to consumption

The cold chain

The thermal bags for the transport of frozen foods keep the product intact but it is also up to the consumer to do so. For this reason, a good habit is to bring cool bags with you. These are reusable and maintain low temperatures for as long as possible. In this way the thermal shock is significantly reduced and the product does not defrost. Fridge bags are very useful when you have to buy a frozen product and you don't have the possibility of immediately placing it in the freezer. Another precaution, also useful for the environment, is to leave supermarket freezers open the minimum necessary to choose the product.

In the departments where the freezers are open, the duty of all of us is to touch the various packages at random as little as possible. For storage it is always useful to check the information reported by the manufacturer directly on the packaging. Some foods must defrost naturally while there are others that are ready to eat after cooking. Repeatedly touching some frozen food packages could also ruin the food.

The importance of temperatures for frozen food

Frozen products are protected by the layer of ice that surrounds them and which serves to preserve the organoleptic properties of all the ingredients. For this reason, the need to keep the temperature low and constant is motivated by that of preserving defrosting. The water produced by an external increase in temperatures could freeze again as soon as the bag is placed back in the freezer.

In this process part of the food could deteriorate and put the health of the consumer at risk. This is also why consumers must pay attention to the suggested consumption norms and good practices for home food storage. In this case it is a good idea to read the information and instructions on the packages of frozen foods so as to preserve them as best as possible.
